11 Tips on Housebreaking a Dog - How to Make Housebreaking Easier and Quicker

If you are trying to housebreak a dog here are 11 tips to help make the process much easier, quicker, and more fun for all involved. Consistency is the key to making it work, so put these tips into practice everyday, and you will see big returns on your investment.

1. Dogs love schedules so stick to them. Dogs like to know what is going to happen and when. If your dog knows it will go out to pee first thing in the morning, it will hold it until then.

2. If you can't monitor them keep them in a crate. Dogs that cannot be monitored should be confined. Unattended dogs cannot be instantly corrected, so do not let them roam the house.

3. Get all family members involved in housebreaking the dog. When everyone agrees and sticks to the schedule the process goes much easier.

4. Go to the same pee spot every time. Again, dogs love routines, so give it to them.

Also, your dog will then know that when you go to this spot, they are expected to pee.

5. Use lots of positive reinforcement. Yelling and hitting the dog are counter productive and will only lead to your dog fearful of you.

6. Don't give your dog water 2 hours before bedtime or overnight. Puppies have small bladders, so make it easier on them by restricting water.

7. Take your dog out after every meal to go potty. Your dog needs frequent potty breaks, so give it to them.

8. Take your dog out first thing in the morning and last thing at night. This helps to develop a routine, and also gives your dog lots of exercise.

9. Make sure you get your dog a properly sized crate. A crate that is too big, will result in the dog using one corner to pee in.

10. Remember that you are in charge and need to assume the role of pack leader. Dogs like strong leaders not submissive ones.

11. Lastly, be happy and enjoy time spent housebreaking your new puppy. Use this time to create a bond that will last a lifetime.
